AMH - a new look into ovarian age
Until now the reserve of eggs in the ovaries was assessed by an ultrasound test and by the FSH level on the 2nd- 3rd day of the menstrual cycle. However, these tests are not very precise. A breakthrough discovery is the determination of the AMH level. This test shows the ovarian capacity and helps to evaluate fertility at any given time.
The Anti-Mullerian Hormone is expressed by the granulosa cells of developing antral follicles. These follicles contain immature eggs waiting for a hormonal impulse to start the maturation process. Their number decreases with age and therefore the level of AMH is lower as well. With higher age the quality of eggs decreases too. This is due to factors such as genetics, infections, operations, smoking, lifestyle and weight.
We recommend the AMH test to women who:
- Have a family history of premature menopause
- Have undergone an operation on their ovaries
- Have heavy endometriosis
- Have had chemotherapy
- Are planning their motherhood for later in life
The ovarian reserve assessment is a key factor in IVF therapy. AMH can be a helpful aspect for making decisions on suitable medication doses. AMH can be tested at any phase of the menstrual cycle and while using BC pills. This test is not covered by health insurance. The test is followed up with a consultation with a fertility specialist.
